| The personal umbrella policy (sometimes
called a "personal protector" policy) is
designed to lessen the worry and financial burden of
facing personal litigation on your own. By increasing
the liability limits on your existing policies,
virtually any policy (such as a homeowner, boat or
automobile) which contains a limit of liability can go
under an umbrella. It provides for expanded liability
coverage which may be needed if a serious accident
occurs.
In general, a personal umbrella policy includes the
following features:
Extended Coverage
This policy takes over where your basic automobile and
homeowners policies leave off by providing up to
$1,000,000 of additional liability coverage.
Broader Coverage
This policy also provides coverage that may not be
offered by your basic policies, such as coverage against
lawsuits for libel, slander, defamation of character or
invasion of privacy. It also extends the same coverage
to your spouse and other relatives living in the
household.
Legal Defense Payments
If a policyholder is sued because of a covered
occurrence and the primary insurance policies do not
apply or have been exhausted, the Personal Umbrella
Policy will pay legal expenses incurred, including
attorney fees and court costs.
Required Underlying Limits
An umbrella policy can only be issued if the liability
limits on the policy(s) it covers meet the criteria
shown below. Since these limits reflect an average of
what most insurance carriers require, you should consult
our customer service department if you have any
questions about these limits.
